This quote has inspired me to write about my newest perspectives on setting goals and having them succeed. These perspectives apply to success in our working life and when building great etiquette habits.

This quote hit me deeply because we all start projects and establish goals, but we often never finish them. It made me wonder why we don’t finish the goals we really want to accomplish.

  1. Take baby steps: Instead of viewing goals as rigid endpoints that must be finished, see them as an ever-evolving process. Embrace each step as a fun learning opportunity. Break down the overall goal into smaller, bite-sized, achievable milestones. By celebrating these incremental achievements, you maintain momentum and motivation throughout the journey.Track your baby steps in a happiness or success journal. Make notes about your process and progress every day.  Review and be proud of your accomplishments. This motivates us to continue moving forward each day through all that life throws at us.
  2. Choose a deep motivator. Incremental small rewards and recognition for achievements are valuable; however, their highs fade over time. Instead, cultivate a core and intrinsic motivation, sometimes called a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal). You need something so meaningful that you will stay committed, even when faced with challenges or setbacks. Keeping this core motivation at the forefront of your every breath will sustain your drive for long-term success.
  3. Make consistency a priority: Striving for perfection can lead to procrastination or paralysis by analysis, which I am learning to overcome. Instead, prioritize consistency in every effort. Celebrate the successes you make daily. Establish a routine and system that enables you to make steady progress toward your goal, even if it’s just a small step each day. Understand that consistency builds momentum and habit. Both are essential pillars for sustainable success.
  4. Adapt to change: Despite meticulous planning, circumstances often change, requiring adaptation. Develop an agile mindset. Continuously assess progress and adjust the approach based on new information. Stay open to what is happening around you and be willing to make course corrections and alternative strategies that better align with your reality and priorities.
  5. Hold yourself accountable: No more blaming the economy or who knows what else. Be honest and candid with yourself when holding yourself to account for your actions. Engage with a support network or mentor who can hold you accountable for your actions. Share your goals with trusted individuals who can offer constructive feedback, encouragement, and accountability checks.Consider using weekly mechanisms for self-accountability, such as progress trackers or regular reflections on your journey weekly.  Do not wait to do it monthly or even bi-weekly.  When too much time passes, catching up and course corrections become harder.

    Rememeber, the journey towards goal attainment is equally important as the destination itself. By embracing and leveraging these SMART perspectives, the likelihood of realizing your deepest aspirations can come true.
