To follow last month’s tip on Mother’s Day (Also at https://www.advancedetiquette.com/2018/05/honoring-moms-worldwide/), it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t also discuss Father’s Day. Take a moment to reread the tips I shared last month, as they are equally applicable to this month’s focus.

For most Americans, Father’s Day has always been as customary as Mother’s Day. However, in learning more about its history, I learned it wasn’t a U.S. federal holiday until years after Mother’s Day. Whether your Dad is nearby, far away, or someone who has served as the Dad in your life, honor him on this special day no different than for Mom’s on Mother’s Day.

My Mom passed away years before my Dad, so I had many years of primarily celebrating Father’s Day. This day meant a great deal to my Dad. So, don’t kid yourself in thinking Dads aren’t sentimental about this holiday. I promise you if you show you care about him on this day, it will be well received.

Father’s Day may not be as elaborate as for Mother’s Day, with its flowers and candy. Yet, your Dad will appreciate you making the effort to spend time with him and be in touch this day. With my Dad, it was the one time a year he allowed my siblings and me to take him out for brunch or dinner. The rest of the year, he always insisted on paying.

If you choose to give your Dad a gift, make it something meaningful and useful to his current life. If he’s into cooking or gardening, various sports, or just relaxing at home, I know there’s something you can find he will appreciate. You just need to take some time to look… in stores or online, a week in advance.

Most of all, the point of this tip is to make sure you don’t pass this day up.  It is the best day of the year to be in touch with your Dad, to say and show how much you care about all the good he means to you in his life… whether past, present, and future.

Here’s to all the Dads in the world… Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Practicing!
